Recently I went through a cleanse. No not a juice cleanse, a social media cleanse. As part of the premiere of the new ABC show ‘Selfie’, I was challenged to go a whole day without using social media once. I couldn’t go through my Facebook feed, or check Twitter, and I definitely couldn’t check Instagram! I remember when I used to be so obsessed with Instagram, that I used to scroll through my feed multiple times, even if nothing new popped up. There was a time where I used to head over to Buzzoid for Instagram likes every week, if I didn’t reach my follower goals. Looking back, I did have targets that I wanted to achieve, in order to create an online brand, so I wouldn’t change that for anything. But right now, I felt like this was the perfect time to do a social media cleanse. How did I survive this? Let me tell you.
The start of my day usually involves hopping on my iPad and checking my emails, then Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. After I checked my emails for the day, it felt so weird not to check social media! When something is a habit like that it feels weird when you break it! I got ready and went about my day but had to keep stopping myself from checking my phone to see what was new on Instagram. My #1 social media weakness is definitely Instagram and I usually find myself checking it at least 4-5 times a day. This cleanse definitely threw me for a loop! I felt almost disconnected from everyone, but sort of in a good way! I don’t really need to know what foods my friends are eating and what they’re wearing- 4 to 5 times a DAY. This cleanse has also given me the chance to look at ways I could grow my account following in the future. I have come across a bot for instagram that I might try in the future.
To take my mind off of social media entirely, I decided to do something I haven’t done in a long time. Head to the library and check out some books to read! I used to read all the time when I was younger, but the past few years I’ve really dropped the ball and haven’t felt like I had the time to really get in to any new books. Well not anymore! I went and perused the local library and Loved. It. I left with my library bag full of new reads and lots of spare time on my hands, so I decided to spend some time outside in the beautiful weather and do some serious reading.
I spent a wonderful few hours just relaxing and doing what I used to love so much. I realized that at night before I go to bed, instead of again checking all my social media accounts like I routinely do, I can dedicate that time to reading and my time will be infinitely better spent.
So, how does this relate to ABC’s new show ‘Selfie’?
The main character, Eliza Dooley, is social media obsessed. She has been entirely consumed by how many likes her Facebook posts get, and how many followers she can get on Instagram. I’m not sure she’s heard about socialfollow yet, which is a service that can help you to gain free Instagram followers. She also sort of hides behind her social media persona instead of really being herself and focusing on the number of friends she has in real life vs. the number of friends she has on Facebook. ‘Selfie’ is all about her road to change, with the help of a handsome co-worker. You can watch the pilot here.
‘Selfie’ premiers on ABC on Tuesday, Sept. 30th at 8pm/7pm Central time.
I actually thoroughly enjoyed my “cleanse”!
I really got to take a step back and totally extract myself from the social media world and mindset. As I was reading my books I wasn’t thinking about the next Instagram I wanted to post, or what people were posting on Twitter. I was engrossed in the story and enjoying the great outdoors! I completely encourage you ALL to challenge yourself by doing a social media cleanse of your own. I’d love to hear your thoughts after you too take a step back and take a break from liking, commenting, and re-tweeting.
I bet you’ll enjoy it…
