As most of you should know, I am a “faux” redhead and have been for about 3 years now. It has been a long journey but I truly love it, and over the years I’ve learned lots of tips and tricks for maintaining my hair color between salon appointments! I’ve been meaning to share them with you, so this is the first of a series of posts speaking to just that. These tips don’t just apply to redheads, most products I use come in other shades and would work for just about anyone looking to lengthen their time between salon colorist appointments! Let’s get to it…
I’d like to note that these photos make my roots look rather subtle, but I assure you in person this inch of dark brown poking out is VERY distracting and noticeable if left untouched! It had been about 5 weeks since my last color appointment when these photos were taken, and I’ve been taking some hair vitamins that seem to be doing their job. I didn’t have time to get to the salon so I use my tricks for hiding any outgrowth!
You might have seen Style Edit at the salon you go to - they make a range of color protecting and lengthening products that professional colorists recommend. For the past while I’ve used the Style Edit Root Touch-Up powder for reds. I’ve tried MANY root concealing products in my redhead journey - colored sprays, colored dry shampoo, and even just regular eyeshadow! Anything to give me a few extra weeks between appointments (not just for convenience, but it’s also quite expensive!) The Style Edit root touch up powder is hands down my favorite method for hiding my brunette roots, which won’t be used for the likes of these models over at https://www.nu-bay.com/categories/168/brunette.
Would you believe that when I use this powder, even with an inch or more of growth, I get complimented on my hair color and asked if it’s my real color? I’ve had some people act just shocked when I say no, and they comment on how natural it looks. I just laugh to myself and think IF ONLY YOU COULD SEE MY ROOTS!
Now, on to the application…
It comes in a compact type container and looks fairly similar to eyeshadow. Having used eyeshadow though, I assure you the formula is very different. I’ve had weird smudges on my face all day because I tried to make eyeshadow work on my roots. The Style Edit powder really bonds to the hair and doesn’t budge for days, even when I brush it out and touch my hair, it doesn’t get on my hands.
The applicator is a sponge and very easy and quick to use - I keep one at home and one in my purse if I need any touch-ups. It really sticks to the hair and there really isn’t anything to it, just dab on and you’re done! I also love to use it when I do up-do’s to fill in my wonky hairline. It makes hair look thinner and I can even change the shape of my forehead and hairline, making me much more confident if I do ponytails or top knots.
I use Light Red right now, and sometimes layer with Medium-Red.
Before VS After:
The colors are very versatile and no matter what shade of red you are, you should be able to find a good match with one of the 3 powders. If you’re not a redhead, there are powders for blonde and brunette HERE!

What do you use to preserve your color and hide those roots?
